Fisheries
The Fisheries Industry is another vital sector for the
Ireland North West constituency, and I am currently a substitute member of this committee in the European Parliament. This will
increase the chances of fairer fishing legislation being
adopted and it being more favourable to Irish fishermen.
My Priorities for the Fishing Industry
As a member of the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee, I hope to achieve the following:
I will work to increase the monitoring of foreign vessels entering Irish Waters and ensure that other countries monitor catches landed in the ports to detect illegal fishing in Irish Waters.
Ensure that Fishermen have more control over the quota system and Ireland gets a Quota in line with its Ocean Resources.
Ensure adequate funding for job diversification in fishing communities.
Develop the potential of the seafood industry for the North and West Coasts.
Ensure that no decisions are made without full cooperation with Fishermen and Scientists.
The EU and Fishing
In
the European Parliament the Fisheries Committee is responsible
for:
- the operation and development of the common fisheries
policy and its management;
- the conservation of fishery
resources;
- the common organisation of the market in fishery
products;
- structural policy in the fisheries and aquaculture
sectors;
- International fisheries agreements.

The
main instrument for supporting the Fisheries sector in
the EU is the European Fisheries Fund and is controlled
by the BIM in Ireland at the request of the European
Commission.
This Regulation establishes a new European
Fisheries Fund (EFF) for the period 2007-13. It sets
the Fund's objectives and priorities plus the responsibilities
under it and the financial framework. It also sets out
the arrangements for programming, managing monitoring
and following up the EFF. The new Fund provides financial
assistance to help implement the latest reform of the
common fisheries policy (CFP) and to support the restructuring
that has become necessary as the sector has developed.
