Agriculture

Agriculture is key industry for Ireland North West. The sector faces enormous challenges but with the right support from the European Union and National Governments the industry can halt its decline and become a modern vibrant section of our economy.

Ireland as one of the EU's strongest agricultural regions stands to benefit most from new opportunities in Agriculture and Agri-food sectors.

Throughout my term of office, I hope to :

Work towards limiting the paperwork from EU Directives and Regulations

Ensure a proper country of origin labelling system

Ensure that Irish Farmers get the best deal possible when the CAP is renegotiated

Ensure that young farmers get the support they need

Ensure that Irish Farmers can access MEPs and the Commission at all times

On the 1st of April 2009 the European Commission presented today a White Paper outlining actions needed to strengthen the Union's resilience in coping with a changing climate.

Then Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said: "European agriculture will feel the full force of climate change. I want to give farmers a clear understanding of the challenges they will face, and I want to launch discussions about specific steps to help our farmers to adapt"
