Ireland's North West European Constituency is
compiled of eleven Counties from all four Provinces, Ulster, Connaught
and Munster and Leinster. It includes counties Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan,
Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway, Clare, Westmeath and Longford. The Constituency is allocated three seats in the
European Parliament out of Ireland's current total of
12.
The Demographic Profile of the
Constituency
The area has seen substantial demographic growth
in keeping with the other Irish Constituencies over
recent years. The period 1996-2002 saw the region's
population grow by 7.4% to over 814,000 people.
The latest figures for the region show that it has grown
7.9% in the period 2002-2006. The population now stands
at approximately 880,000.
The total number of people in the Labour
Force in the region according to the 2002 Census showed
the figure stood at fewer than 360,000.
The number of persons aged 0-19 inclusive
stood at 245,187 in the 2002 Census results.
