GAA On The Ball With Road Safety

Jim Higgins MEP for Ireland North West welcomes the GAA road safety campaign.

Speaking from his constituency office in Mayo Jim Higgins welcomed the GAA 'Live to Play' campaign. Since April Ireland has seen a horrifying reversal of the previous reduction in road deaths. "Every effort must be made to reverse this worrying trend."

"Young drivers need to be educated as to the dangers of speeding and I must commend the GAA for their innovative thinking."

"For years we have watched successive detailed and frightening ads, yet the message has failed to hit home with its target audience, now we must try a different approach - education. We need to urgently introduce road safety education in secondary schools. Transition year offers the obvious opportunity with it's open curriculum and I can not understand why such a program isn't already in place."

"The terrible truth is that every day we witness irresponsible driver behaviour and it is only by sheer luck that we don't see more accidents."

"The reduction of deaths on our roads requires a multifaceted approach and listening to and educating young drivers is something we have yet to try."

"Education is the way forward."
