Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins has called on the government to draw up a national strategy to create and regulate internship positions for young workers. Mr Higgins believes that it is vital for the future of our economy that young workers are well trained and experienced.
In a statement Mr Higgins said, "internships are a valuable source of experience for a young person trying to enter the working world and they give young people insight into working life and to gain experience and ability."
"In order for Ireland to expand our knowledge based economy there is a need for better trained workers. I strongly believe that by introducing a comprehensive internship programme in Ireland it will help to fill this vacuum of experienced and well trained young workers in our economy. At the moment we have an exceptional well educated workforce but many young people find it hard to gain practical experience in their chosen profession".
Mr. Higgins points out that it is very important that the Government introduces guidelines which must be adhered to by employers when dealing with interns.
"These guidelines must help prevent the exploitation of young workers, which which is currently a major problem for young interns.
Mr. Higgins condemns the fact that many interns have to endure "Long hours, low wages and in many cases no remuneration. The Government must introduce a coherent policy which will help regulate internship programmes for the benefit of young people".
Young workers are vital for the future of our economy and it is important that they are respected and treated properly.
